The 2024 Cheongju Traditional Craft Festival, scheduled to unfold in September, is expected to be a barrier-free festival open to everyone.

The Cheongju Craft Biennale Organizing Committee (Chairperson Lee Beom-seok, Mayor of Cheongju; hereinafter referred to as the “Organizing Committee”) announced that it has been selected for the “2024 Barrier-Free Cultural Enjoyment Support Project” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Korea Disability Arts & Culture Center, receiving KRW 70 million government subsidy.

The purpose of this project is to expand cultural engagement opportunities and enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Accordingly, a call for proposals was launched, inviting submissions across a spectrum of areas including cultural facilities, content, and information.

This year's call attracted applications from 26 institutions nationwide, with 12 ultimately selected. Among these, the Organizing Committee was the sole institution selected from the Chungcheong region.

As a result, the Organizing Committee is set to host a three-day “Barrier-Free Week” under the theme “Crafts! and Accessibility” during the 2024 Cheongju Traditional Craft Festival scheduled to take place at Dongbu Changko 6 in the Culture Factory from September 13th to 22nd.

Designed to foster inclusive appreciation of craft culture regardless of age, generation, disability, or non-disability, “Barrier-Free Week” will feature craft experiences targeting people with disabilities and the elderly, tactile exhibitions, sign language interpretation, Braille guides, relaxing performances, artist demonstrations accompanied by professional sign language interpreters, and workshops aimed at raising awareness of disabilities.

“This barrier-free cultural engagement support project is designed to provide an opportunity to shed light on the therapeutic benefits and community-building aspects of crafts, paving the way for Cheongju to emerge as an authentic global craft city where craft culture is accessible to all without barriers,” a representative from the Organizing Committee said. They also expressed high hopes for broad anticipation and enthusiastic engagement in the 2024 Cheongju Traditional Craft Festival to serve as an inclusive event accessible to all.

This year marks the third installment of the Cheongju Traditional Craft Festival, building upon the success of its predecessors in 2020 and 2022. The festival was established to spotlight the region's traditional crafts during the years when the Cheongju Craft Biennale is not held.
