- Cheongju Early Printing Museum participates in the world’s largest printing industry fair, which discusses “sustainability and digitalization” -

Cheongju Early Printing Museum announced its participation in “drupa 2024,” the world’s largest printing industry fair, held in Düsseldorf, Germany from May 28 to Jun. 7.

The museum participated in this fair by hosting an event linked to “In the Beginning There was Jikji - Korea's Big Bang of Printing History,” the international exhibition commenced in Klingspor Museum in Offenbach near Frankfurt at the end of April.

At drupa 2024, Cheongju Early Printing Museum showcases Jikji and Korea’s print culture to visitors worldwide. The museum display Jikji’s replica, metal types, and relevant educational content for foreign institutes in a popup exhibition format.

“drupa” is the world’s largest event in the field of printing, gathering around 300,000 visitors every session. In particular, it is praised as a must-join fair to discover the latest technology and trends for printing industry parties.

The event was held once every four years; however, this year’s session opened eight years after the previous one due to COVID-19.

With “digitalization” and “sustainability” as its key themes, this year’s session sets the stage for discussions on innovation and trends including special forums, conferences, and seminars according to each theme as well as displays.

Around 1,400 enterprises from 50 countries have gathered in an area spanning over 50,000 ㎡ to strive to broaden the spectrum of culture and art through digital methods and allow more people to enjoy cultural and artistic aspects.

Meanwhile, within the ever-changing landscape, Cheongju Early Printing Museum has also strived to find a new path to globalizing Jikji through digitalization.

Since the second half of last year, the museum has produced the real-life experience content “Digital Book Jikji” to join the worldwide movement to expand the utility of world heritage through the convergence of tangible human assets and latest technology.

When the user touches the actual book made of paper, “Digital Book Jikji” provides easier understanding of Jikji by translating the Chinese characters into Korean letters along with various animation clips.

Preparations for the digital book’s technical implementation are complete; the museum is carrying out final procedures to strengthen the content targeting locals to be utilized overseas, according to the National Library of Frence’s proposal.

The members of the museum expect to seize this opportunity to visit the library and continue exchanges after their schedule in Germany.

“Digital Book Jikji” will make its first appearance at the 2024 Jikji Festival 2024 held within Cheongju Early Printing Museum’s area from Sept. 4 to 8.
