Cheongju City celebrated on May 30 the completion of Sacheon Neighborhood Park, which had been neglected as an unexecuted project for extended periods.

Located at 225-75, Sacheon-dong, the park has an area of 31,799 ㎡. Despite its designation in 1985, it failed to be constructed as a park due to financial constraints. It was in danger of disbanding in 2020 when the sunset clause for urban planning facilities was scheduled for implementation.

Although the area had excellent access due to its short distance from Cheongwon Library and apartment complexes, citizens frequently demanded construction of a park as it was severely damaged by massive farming and illegal possessions.

In response, the city government decided to initiate an independent project and complete the park to revive the damaged ecosystem and offer citizens a space for rest and relaxation.

The city government began purchasing land in 2018, received initiation plan approval in December 2019, and completed land compensation procedures in October 2021.

After finalizing working designs and briefing sessions for residents, the city commenced construction in August 2023.

The park was completed in May 2024 with total funding of KRW 3.48 billion (Chungcheongbuk-do: KRW 490 million, Cheongju-si: KRW 2.99 billion).

During the project, Cheongju City made efforts to apply as many demands from citizens as possible by hosting briefing sessions for residents. The residents wanted as much dirt road as possible for existing hiking trails including facilities with waterscape, multipurpose ballpark, and rest areas.

Cheongju City accepted the residents’ requests and created various facilities for Sacheon Neighborhood Park, including a natural habitat that induces the influx of organisms using rubbles, branches, and birdhouses to commune with nature, a floor fountain to cool down the summer heat, a children’s playground, an observatory for rest, interaction, and reading behind Cheongwon Library, an area to wash the hands and feet, several restrooms, and a multipurpose ballpark to enhance residents’ athletic abilities.

Around 200 people including mayor of Cheongju, Lee Beom-seok, city council members, and residents participated in the completion ceremony on May 30 to celebrate the project’s completion. The event kicked off with a pre-ceremony performance, status report, congratulatory messages, tape cutting, and walking event.

“Sacheon Neighborhood Park is the result of Cheongju City’s independent efforts to save the unexecuted urban park project from the risk of reckless development. We designed the park beyond being a simple area for rest to become an ecosystem network to bring in various forms of life,” a city official said.

Meanwhile, the city aims to complete Bokdae Neighborhood Park in Heungdeok-gu and Naesu Central Neighborhood Park in Cheongwon-gu by June and Forest Resonance Park in Sangdang-gu by July.
