Cheongju-si is launching a project to create pedestrian-oriented road environments. Through the project, Cheongju-si is investing KRW 300 million to improve four diagonal pedestrian crossings at specific intersections by Geumcheon Elementary School, Yongam-dong City Library, Gagyeong-dong Seohyeonjung-ro, and Ochang Gakri Elementary School.

Diagonal pedestrian crossings are a type of ‘X’ shaped crossings, and refer to the pedestrian crossings that are installed at the intersections in addition to the horizontal and vertical pedestrian crossings.

At the intersections where diagonal pedestrian crossings are installed, pedestrian signals in all directions of the road turn green at the same time while all vehicle traffic comes to a stop. This allows pedestrians to cross the intersection in any direction.

According to traffic accident analysis at 76 diagonal pedestrian crossings installed in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from 2007 to 2016, the total amount of traffic accidents decreased by 7.09% after installation of the diagonal pedestrian crossings. In addition, the number of traffic accidents that resulted in severe injuries also decreased by 24.7% out of all traffic accidents that impact lives. Based on the analysis, it is expected the installation of diagonal pedestrian crossings will have an effect of decreasing the frequency of traffic accidents and associated injuries.

In March, the city has successfully completed a deliberation process required for the installation of traffic safety facilities in cooperation with the National Policy Agency, police stations, and the Road Traffic Authority. The plan is to commence construction in April, and complete the project in the latter half of this year to improve citizens’ convenience and pedestrian environments.

A city representative stated, “Currently, there are 21 diagonal pedestrian crossings in Cheongju-si. Once four new diagonal pedestrian crossings are installed by the end of this year, we will have begun to greatly transform pedestrian-oriented road and traffic environments. We also expect to see a significant decrease in the number of traffic accidents that impact lives. We will do our best to improve the overall safety of our traffic and pedestrian environments.”
