Oriental storks which have been designated as Natural Monument No. 199 are scheduled to be released in Cheongju-si.
Cheongju-si has been selected as a site of releasing oriental storks, along with other areas such as Yesan (Chungcheongnam-do), Gimhae (Gyeongsangnam-do), Gochang (Jeollabuk-do) and Haenam (Jeollanam-do), by participating in the release site contest held by the Cultural Heritage Administration.
Oriental storks became extinct in Korea due to poaching in 1971, and currently it is being designated and managed as a natural monument, as well as endangered wildlife. The Cultural Heritage Administration succeeded in restoring and proliferating oriental storks, and it has selected releasing sites through this event in order to release oriental storks across the nation.

From 2020, Cheongju-si plans to select areas that are suitable for the release of oriental storks after consulting the Cultural Heritage Administration and will release oriental storks in 2021 after the construction of release sites and the period of adaptation.
An official of Cheongju-si said, “We will take various measures, such as the construction of an environmentally-friendly habitat, so that oriental storks can settle as a resident bird in Cheongju-si and we will do our best to offer various ecological educational services for citizens after completing the remodeling of Cheongnam Oriental Stork Park in the future.”
