The Chojeong Temporary Palace Construction Project, to replicate the temporary palace where King Sejong stayed in order to treat his eyes and finish the creation of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, was completed on December 3, and it is expected to revitalize tourism for the Chojeong area.
Cheongju-si began the Chojeong Temporary Palace Project in December 2017, comprising facilities such as living quarters, council hall, royal kitchen, and Korean traditional accommodation area on a land plot of 37,651 m2 with a building area of 2,055 m2 in the vicinity of Chojeong Cultural Park in Naesu-eup, with a budget of KRW 16.57 billion, and it was completed after two years of construction.
This Chojeong Temporary Palace was built with the elements of palace architecture based on consultations with royal palace experts while considering harmony with Culture Park according to each spatial hierarchy and geographical features.
In the process of constructing the Chojeong Temporary Palace, Cheongju-si had resolved 12 cases of civil complaints smoothly, such as residents’ opposition against the installation of solar panels; opposition against the operation of Cheongwon-gu’s direct trading market; and civil complaints regarding outstanding payment of construction cost by the construction company, through mediation and persuasion of interested parties and businesses.
After tuning up the interior space of the Chojeong Temporary Palace such as the interior of each area, exhibition and furnishing, the palace will be opened in June next year along with an upgraded Chojeong Sparkling Water Festival.
Cheongju-si has an ambitious plan to create the central region as a “wellness tourism” area around the Chojeong Temporary Palace through an agreement on facility sharing which connects Jwagusan Mountain of Jeungpyeong, Edufarm and Chojeong Cluster Project which will be completed in 2021.
