Subject Opening of the 8th Korean Urban Agriculture Expo in Cheongju, Where the City and Farm Villages Laugh Together

- Held around Cheongju City Agricultural Technology Center from This Coming May 23 to 26 (4 Days)

Cheongju City will be holding the 8th Korean Urban Agricultural Expo, an urban agriculture festival, at the area around Cheongju City Agricultural Technology Center for 4 days from this coming May 23 to 26. This will be the expo’s first time being hosted in the Chungcheong region.

The host site for the Korean Urban Agricultural Expo is chosen every year by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) through a public contest. Cheongju City was chosen as the hosting site for 2019 in June of last year, and will be holding the expo alongside MAFRA, the Rural Development Administration (RDA), the Korea Forest Service (KFS), and Chungcheongbuk-do.

The city is quickly moving to ensure the successful hosting of the Korean Urban Agricultural Expo.

In the 7th Korean Urban Agricultural Expo held in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do last September, the city set up the Cheongju City Promotional Booth and created a photo zone using vegetable gardens and green walls, which was well-received by visitors to the expo.

Last October, the city also formed an organizing committee of 21 experts in the urban agriculture field, with the director of MAFRA’s Seed & Bio Industry Division and the director general of Cheongju City’s Planning and Administration Office serving as joint chairpersons. Since its formation, the committee has held 3 meetings to this date, confirming the basic plans for the expo and agreeing on the direction that it should take, therebyjumpstarting the preparations for the expo.

The 8th Korean Urban Agricultural Expo will be composed of the opening ceremony, knowledge forum, exhibitions, hands-on and participation events, competitions and contests, accompanying events, and more.

The opening ceremony will take place on May 23 at 3 pm on the Lawn Plaza Main Stage of the Organic Agricultural Industry Composite Service Support Complex, proceeding in the order of an opening address delivered by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, a welcome address by the Mayor of Cheongju City, an opening performance, and the declaration of the host venue for next year’s expo.

The knowledge forum is composed of the ‘Urban Agriculture Private and Public Joint Policy Workshop’ by the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS), the ‘Horticural Therapy Workshop’ by the Korean Horticultural Therapy& Wellbeing Association (KHTA) , the ‘City Farm Talking Concert’ by the Agriculture, Fisheries & Livestock News, and the ‘Urban Agricultural Talk Show’, which will feature familiar figures such as the hunjang (educator) Kim Bong-gon and the young celebrity/farmer Han Tae-ung.

The expo will feature a diverse lineup of exhibitions, such as the Urban Agricultural Future Pavilion and Urban Agricultural Promotional Pavilion, Exciting Forest Garden, Insect Exhibition and Experience, Rooftop Garden and Living Wall Exhibition, Green Office and Green House Exhibition, Functional Vegetable Garden, Wildflower Art Exhibition, Environmentally-friendly Microorganism Exhibition, Eco Bio Art Special Exhibition, and the Viva! Art Farm installation piece.

The expo will also treat visitors with an assortment of hands-on and participation events featuring programs that can’t be found in the city, such as the chance to grow pet plants, a citizen participation urban agriculture garden care program, the Children’s KkumteulSchool to raise the farmers of the future, food art experience, seeding IT experience, lifestyle horticulture participation program, and planting experience.

Competitions and contests will include the Lifestyle Horticulture Competition (Idea Garden and Dish Garden), Horticultural Therapy Program Competition, and Agricultural Produce Sculpture Competition.

Accompanying events planned for the expo include an amateur performance featuring regional representatives made up of local residents, a stamp rally, a seedling sharing event, and a plant hospital. Furthermore, a food truck zone will also be set up.

Cheongju City Mayor Han Beum-deuk stated, “We will work to develop killer content that differentiates this year’s expo from previous ones and ensure that many people can participate” and added, “We will do our best to help Cheongju City become the mecca of the urban agriculture industry as well as the prime model of hybrid urban agriculture with coexistence between cities and farm villages.”
