직지세계화선언문

우리는 오늘, 지난 천년의 역사와 오는 천년의 희망을 모아 여기 서 있다. 천 개의 고원에 서서 드넓은 세상, 광활한 우주를 향하여 대항해를 시작하는 것이다. 오늘의 직지 세계화 선언은 청주를 세계수준의 학습문화도시로 가꾸는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 직지 세계화 선언의 또 다른 목표는 세계문명사의 빛나는 자산인 직지(直指)의 가치를 세계의 보편적 가치로 재창출하는 것이다.

직지는 1377년 고려의 청주에서 인쇄되어 현존하는 세계최고의 금속활자본으로 현재 프랑스 국립도서관에 소장되어 있다. 그 고귀한 보물은 1972년 이역만리 파리에서 발견되었고 직지를 인쇄한 흥덕사지는 1984년에 그 모습을 드러냈다. 그로부터 청주시민과 행정 기관의 노력 그리고 학계의 연구 활동 등이 다양하게 진행되었다. 그 결과 직지는 2001년 세계기록유산(Memory of the World)에 등재되었는가 하면 2004년 유네스코 직지상(Jikji Prize)도 제정되었다. 이제 그 성과를 바탕으로 전세계를 향하여 직지의 정신과 직지의 가치를 전파하는 일이 필요하다.

고려인들이 정성(精誠)의 불꽃을 지펴 만든 직지 금속활자는 우수한 표현매체이면서 중요한 문화자본이다. 직지는 금속활자를 발명한 창조적 가치, 지식 전달의 교육적 가치, 세계문명사적인 가치, 정보의 공유와 확산의 가치, 예술문화적 가치와 아울러서 우리 민족의 뛰어난 역량이 표현된 보물이다. 하지만 우리는 금속활자의 가치를 잘 살리지 못했을 뿐만 아니라 인류문명사에 크게 기여하지 못했다는 사실을 정확하게 인식해야 한다. 그러한 반성의 토대에서 직지의 정신과 의미를 전세계로 발신(發信)하는 한편 우리 스스로 인류문명사에 기여할 수 있는 가치를 창출하고자 하는 것이다. 이제 직지는 청주인만의 자산이 아니라 한국인 모두, 그리고 세계시민들의 문화자산이 되었다. 직지의 세계화와 보편화를 실현하기 위하여 우리는 국제교류와 같은 문화전략, 세계 순회전시와 같은 홍보전략, 직지문화지구 조성과 같은 산업전략을 다각도로 추진할 것이다.

우리는 세계적 획일과 정치적 패권으로서의 세계화를 거부하고 문화적 다양성을 존중하고 지속가능한 발전을 추구한다. 그리하여 패권과 독점으로서의 직지가 아닌 상생과 조화의 직지가 되도록 할 것이다. 우리는 서양문명의 귀중한 자산인 독일 구텐베르크 활자를 존중하는 한편 프랑스인들의 문화적 진정성을 존경한다. 그런 의미에서 중국, 일본, 에티오피아, 러시아, 미국, 이라크 등 여러 나라의 문화와 함께 미래의 새로운 문명사를 열어갈 것을 제안한다. 서자여사(逝者如斯)라, 저 하늘의 광음은 우리의 결의를 광활한 우주에 전파하리니, 이 어찌 헌걸차지 아니한가! 대항해를 축복하는 하늘천사의 춤도 아름답다. 은하수 찬란한 영원의 시간을 향하여 우리는 이렇게 외친다. “직지여 영원하라, 인류여 영원하라!” 여기 지구촌, 아시아의 한국 청주에서 우주에 발신하는 이 선언은 과거 인류에 대한 존경이며 미래 인류와의 대화이다. 세계시민과 한국인 모두 그리고 청주시민들의 뜻을 모아 오늘 희망과 사랑으로 직지 세계화를 선언한다.

서자여사(逝者如斯)라, 저 하늘의 광음은 우리의 결의를 광활한 우주에 전파하리니, 이 어찌 헌걸차지 아니한가! 대항해를 축복하는 하늘천사의 춤도 아름답다. 은하수 찬란한 영원의 시간을 향하여 우리는 이렇게 외친다. “직지여 영원하라, 인류여 영원하라!”

여기 지구촌, 아시아의 한국 청주에서 우주에 발신하는 이 선언은 과거 인류에 대한 존경이며 미래 인류와의 대화이다. 세계시민과 한국인 모두 그리고 청주시민들의 뜻을 모아 오늘 희망과 사랑으로 직지 세계화를 선언한다.

Declaration of Jikji Globalization

Sitting on fleeting time, we are looking for the infinite universe. What a beautiful cosmos! Earth, the home of mankind, is twinkling in the sky of eternity. We, homo-sapiens of the 21th century, reminisce about the past and anticipate the future. We are just about to send a message of harmony to all the living beings.
The message is the Jikji, the most precious jewel of our thoughtful species, human beings. Along with the flowers of rain, these thousand plateaus are covered with the glory of God and joy of nature. In this moment of time and space, we declare the spreading to all of the Jikji. We will shift from the historical thousand years to the hope filled oncoming thousand years.
The purpose of this declaration is to make Cheongju a cultural and educational city for the world. The Jikji, one of the cultural legacies of a region, may change into a global cultural legacy with this perspective. To universalize the Jikji is the duty of Koreans. If it wasn’t for the Jikji, Koreans could not have made their brilliant accomplishments in this age of informational industry.
The Jikji, the oldest existing metal printing type in the world, was published in 1377 in Choengju and is kept as a unique book in the Manuscrit Orianteaux of France National Library. It was rediscovered in 1972 in France. The Buddhist temple, which was the birth place of Jikji, was excavated in 1984. From that time, the citizens of Cheongju have made every effort and have made lots of progress. As a result of these endeavors, the Jikji was registered as a Memory of the World and it was decided to confer on the Jikji Prize under the authority of UNESCO.
Now, it is time to make known to all the value and spirit of the Jikji. The universalization of the Jikji will be launched with a cultural strategy, informational strategy, and industrial strategy. Let’s open the spiritual mind, and create a new paradigm for education with the Jikji. Let’s make a new scientific and cultural phase with the Jikji. Let’s sincerely spread the light to make Cheongju into a base for a new civilization.
The metal printing type of the Jikji, which was invented by the Korean’s devotion, is the most important expression of this precious cultural capital. This priceless object has the value of creation, the value of education, the value of history, the value of knowledge, and the value of art and culture. Also, the Jikji carries the meaning of equality, sincerity, the sharing of knowledge, modesty, benevolence, peace, sacrifice, piety, petition, and emancipation. However, we should realize that Koreans cannot develop the original value and its meaning successfully on their own. The Jikji has not yet contributed enough to civilization and to world history. With such a regret and reflection in mind, we will be launching a new idea of civilization towards every corner of the world.
We must bear in mind that shallow globalization is a trap for humankind. For that reason, we reject globalization as centralization of power and monopoly over all the things. On the contrary, we will orient towards cultural diversity and multi-culturalism. Through such a humanistic retrospection and an ecological viewpoint, we can promote the thought of the Jikji in this global village. In this context, the Jikji would be a symbol of coexistence and harmony. Deconstructing the contradictions of the age, we are going to reconstruct a new civilization. Humankind can become sustainable and promote development and cultural diversity through these efforts.
Above all, we will respect the meaningful Gutenberg printing culture and will give thanks to the cultural earnestness of the French. As a matter of course, we love all other countries’ cultures, including those of China, Japan, Russia, Spain, etc. With the hope of mutual cooperation, we suggest opening a new age of civilization. This small step will lead to a big process in the near future. The conciliation of all regional cultures, ethnic cultures and geoculture is the real intention of the Jikji.
Herein, as one unified planet of homo-sapiens, we deliver the declaration toward the past and the future. We carry the hope for harmony of every single world-citizen in the world system. Alas, all the existing beings fly in the space like wind and water! Since the velocity of light is dazzling us, we can fly the infinite cosmos with this hope. Isn’t it magnificent?
