The tap water that Cheongju provides to its citizens has been evaluated to conform to the drinking water quality criteria through water quality tests targeting faucets and the water supply process.
The tap water supplied to Cheongju is safe and clean water that was verified to meet the 60 drinking water quality criteria through monthly tests conducted at the Jibuk, Nangseong, and Miwon Purification Plants and K-water Cheongju Purification Plant. Each month, Cheongju Waterworks Authority selects 106 faucets to conduct a water quality test on the four items of residual chlorine, general bacteria, total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and fecal coliforms. Eight of them are designated as intensive management zones and a test on 11 items including residual chlorine is conducted twice a month on these zones. In addition, as a result of a water quality test on 11 items including general bacteria in 38 locations, such as drain fields, end faucets, and areas of the water supply process, the water quality was found to meet the specified criteria, verifying that tap water supplied to Cheongju is safe to use. Cheongju is also focusing on the hygiene control of water purification facilities by checking for the larvae and eggs of insects at each stage of the purification process and installing double-layered insect screens in order to prevent the inflow of insects into water purification facilities. This will relieve citizens’ anxiety that was raised after a series of incidents where larvae were detected in the tap water of other local governments. As larvae can grow easily in the humid drainage holes of bathrooms and kitchens, citizens must also carefully manage their cleanliness at home by cleaning the drains using boiling water or sterilizers. In addition, even if clean tap water is supplied, when a rubber hose is connected to the faucet, disinfectants contained in the tap water reacts to chemicals in the rubber hose and causes bad odors. If the use of a rubber hose is inevitable, it is recommended to use a silicon hose made for food manufacturing that is safe to the human body. An official at the Cheongju City Government said, “We will continue dedicating our efforts to managing water purification facilities and the water quality to ensure the supply of clean and safe tap water.” The results of the monthly drinking water quality tests can be found on the website of Cheongju Waterworks Authority (cheongju.go.kr/sangsudo/) or National Waterworks Information System (waternow.go.kr).
