Title ‘The Extraordinary Ordinary: Craft Brightens the Everyday World’ Special Exhibition at Korean Craft Museum
Writer Cheongju
Subject Breathing in air without a mask under the sparkling sun, meeting a friend or enjoying a meal at a restaurant with family, taking a trip with a loved one or going for a show or an exhibition on a lazy weekend... For all of us who endured over two years to get back to our ordinary days, Korean Craft Museum (Director: Sang-eon Park) presents the special exhibition “The Extraordinary Ordinary: Craft Brightens the Everyday World.”

This special exhibition will be held on the third floor of Gallery 6 at 3F, Cheongju Culture Factory and simultaneously online starting Tue, May 10 for 67 days until Sun, Jul. 17.

A museum official commented, “This exhibition was inspired by Japanese art critic Yanagi Muneyoshi who once said that the pinnacle of craft is a period in which the great become ordinary.” The special exhibition features 20 artists from master craftsmen to modern craft artists who combine beauty and utility in everyday life through careful selection of materials and honing of skills.

The exhibition features 137 artworks divided into three parts—Part 1: The Most Tranquil Movement; Part 2: Familiar Object; and Part 3: The Landscape of Craft.

‘Part 1: The Most Tranquil Movement’ that displays long-accumulated traces of artists’ silent efforts and contemplation was participated by six artists: Hu Haiying from Jingdezhen, China, who creates flat ceramics delivering the sensation of admiring distant scenery through pointillist landscape painting; Otsuki Yosuke from Japan, who carves glass as if carving rocks, Yoo Jounghye from Cheongju who uses hanji to portray the path of thinking; Lee Inchin, whose works are housed in the British Museum and art museums of six different countries, including China, Australia, and Belgium; Park Soungchuel, who touches and pounds on metal plates to build the right mind and attitude as a craftsman; and Lee Jinhwi, who is based in Germany and experiments ceramics with colors.

‘Part 2: Familiar Object’ seeks to discover aesthetics in crafts we use in daily lives. Seven artists participate in this zone: Ryu Jongdae, who proposes life with crafts in between artworks and furniture; Pyeon Sojung, who majored metal craft but fell in love with ottchil, or Korean lacquer technique, and qualified as a cultural heritage repair technician for ottchil; So Soyoung, who modernly reinterprets chaekgado; Kim Gyutae, who creates beautiful ugly pots; Son Taeseon, who visualizes energy of nature with lines, planes, and shadows; Park Seonmin, who upcycles waste glass into new objects; and Choi Yeoncheol, who folds metals to create curves.

Lastly, ‘Part 3: The Landscape of Craft’ connects tradition to contemporary, making us contemplate on the meanings and roles of crafts that reflect different times. The works that are closely related to our ordinary lives are created by seven artists: Jo Daeyong, a nationally designated intangible cultural heritage holder of bamboo blind making who crosses the boundaries of time from Jeongjagak of the royal tomb of King Sejong to the Netflix series Kingdom; Yoo Jian, who collaborates beauty and history with mother-of-pearl by working with Rolls Royce; Kim Dubong, who pounds metals to express the flow and texture of nature; Park Youngho, who connects lines in forms of nets for the past and present to interact; Park Moonyeol, a nationally designated intangible cultural heritage holder of metal craft who restored the historically and cultural important Gyeongbokgung Palace; Yun Gyusang, who retains the existence of paper umbrellas by creating traditional umbrellas to large parasols of hot spots with a hundred touches; and Kwon Jungmo, who contemplates on the warmth of light passed through hanji.

A museum official stated, “We came to understand how valuable and great the ordinary is through COVID-19. In the time of new normal, where we are experiencing new ordinary lives, we hope you enjoy “The Extraordinary Ordinary” with artists who create “landscapes of craft” with the “most tranquil movement” beyond “familiar objects.”

This exhibition is held online and offline. Guided tours are also available three times a day (11 AM, 2 PM, 4 PM), except on Mondays when the museum is closed. Guided tours are open to 10 persons per session. Reservations must be made at least a day prior to the visit through the official website (www.cjkcm.org).
