Subject	Since March 14, public health centers in Cheongju City have been providing free human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccinations to prevent cancer in female reproductive organs, such as cervical cancer, by expanding the target from female adolescents aged 12 years to female adolescents aged between 13 and 17 and women in the low-income brackets aged between 18 and 26. HPV is a virus that is transmitted through sexual contact. In most cases, HPV infections clear up on their own without symptoms. If the infection lasts for a long time, however, it can cause such diseases, as cervical cancer, precancerous cervical lesion, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, and anal and genital condyloma. As of 2018, there were 3,500 new cervical cancer patients (6.8 out of 100,000 persons), and the incidence is the eighth highest among cancers affecting women and the third highest among cancers in women aged between 15 and 34 years. The target was expanded as HPV vaccine is relatively more expensive than other vaccines and it is necessary to increase accessibility of low-income groups, etc. to the vaccine. Female adolescents aged between 13 and 17 (born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008) and women in the low-income brackets (basic livelihood security recipients and the second-lowest income group) aged between 18 and 26 (born between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 2003) can receive free HPV vaccination at public health centers in Cheongju City and designated medical institutions. A spokesperson of a public health center said, “HPV vaccine is the only vaccine for cancer prevention. It displays a very high prevention effect for cancers, such as cervical cancer.
