Cheongju City announced that fines for postponement of motor vehicle inspection will be doubled from April 14 according to the amendment of the Motor Vehicle Management Act.
The key content of the amended Act is to increase the fine 30 days after the expiration of the validity of motor vehicle inspection from KRW 20,000 to KRW 40,000. The KRW 10,000 that’s imposed every three days after 30 days will go up KRW 20,000. The maximum amount of fine imposed when 115 days or more has passed from the expiration of validity of motor vehicle inspection is increased from KRW 300,000 to KRW 600,000. In particular, if a motor vehicle owner does not implement the order of inspection for more than one year, operation of the respective motor vehicle will be suspended. The general motor vehicle inspection service is provided at the inspection stations of Korea Transportation Safety Authority or by private companies designated for the service. Motor vehicles must be inspected within 31 days before and after expiration of inspection validity. Motor vehicles for private use must be inspected in the fourth year since its registration as a new vehicle and every two years from there on, and motor vehicles for business use, vans, and trucks must be inspected once every year or six months depending on the vehicle type and age. A spokesperson of Cheongju City said, “Citizens are asked to check the general motor vehicle inspection period and apply to receive a text message for prior notice on the website of Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
