As the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale accelerates towards its goal of realizing Craft in Future and Dream – Spread out Mongyudowon, various events commemorating D-50 of the festival are causing expectations to mount.

The Cheongju Craft Biennale Organizing Committee (with Mayor Beum-Deuk Han of Cheongju City serving as Chairman, hereinafter the “Organizing Committee”) began ticketing for the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale on the 19th (Mon), which marked D-50 till the beginning of the event, thereby declaring the prelude of the festival.

Following this, the 2nd Academic Symposium will be held on the 20th (Tue) to brainstorm the role of the biennale, including holding discussions on how to have Cheongju City chosen as the UNESCO Creative City for 2021 and turning Cheongju City into a sustainable crafts city. All these will serve to further affirm the presence of the upcoming biennale.

Meanwhile, the KBS Gayo Stage for the Success of the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale held on the 18th (Sun) saw around 20,000 residents of Cheongju City spread their passionate wishes for the biennale’s success to viewers tuning in from all over the nation, and heated up the midsummer night.

□ Ticketing to Open on the 19th (Mon), with Increased Advance Reservation Rates due to Biggest Exhibition Scale Ever and Various Discounts and Benefits

The Organizing Committee announced its admission ticket sales policy and began accepting advance reservations on the 19th (Mon), which marked D-50 till the beginning of the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale.

This year’s biennale is held under the theme of Craft in Future and Dream – Spread out Mongyudowon, and will feature a wide range of events, such as the main exhibition, the Invited Country Exhibition, the Cheongju International Craft Competition, Cheongju Craft Fair, and a museum project.

This year’s biennale will have the largest exhibition scale yet, as the main exhibition – made up of 5 planned exhibitions and 3 special planned exhibitions – will not be contained to just the Cheongju Craft Cluster that serves as the main venue for the biennale, but instead expand its exhibition space to all historical and cultural areas in the entire Cheongju region, including Cheongju Jeongbuk-dong Toseong (Mud Rampart in Jeongbuk-dong), Cheongju Confucian Shrine-Academy, and Old Cheongju Station Museum.

On top of all this, the addition of the museum project, which is linked to 7 national, public, and private art galleries and museums in the Cheongju region, is gathering attention.

Moreover, the biennale marks the first public unveiling of <Culture Factory C>, a former tobacco factory turned massive cultural facility that now houses the Cheongju Craft Cluster, which serves as the main venue for the biennale itself, and MMCA Cheongju, making the festival all the more meaningful.

All these exhibitions, projects, and the Cultural Factory C can be enjoyed at the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale with the purchase of admission tickets, priced as follows: KRW 12,000 for adults; KRW 8,000 for teens; and KRW 6,000 for both children and visitors meriting special treatment (seniors aged 65 and older, those with a certain disability rating, active soldiers, etc.).

Various promotions and benefits are also offered to reduce the burden of ticket costs on visitors.

The first of these is the early bird discount, which allows people to purchase tickets on Ticketlink, Naver, TMON, WEMAKEPRICE, and other online vendors at discounted prices (KRW 2,000 off each ticket). Meanwhile, anyone with a Munhwa Nuri Card can purchase tickets at 50% off, and even choose to have their tickets issued on-site.

Another benefit worth keeping an eye on is the newly unveiled Free Pass, which allows holders to freely enter the biennale as they please during the entire 41-day period. The pass, which costs KRW 40,000 when purchased through an advance reservation and KRW 50,000 when purchased during the biennale’s duration, also comes with an official 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale souvenir.

Meanwhile, the Art Week One-Pass might be the pass of choice for exhibition aficionados.

The Art Week One-Pass allows visitors to visit up to 3 biennales – Cheongju Craft Biennale, Gwangju Design Biennale, and Korean International Ceramic Biennale – at discounts of 50% or more off. The Art Week One-Pass can be purchased on the Ticketlink website, or on-site at any of the 3 biennales.

The Organizing Committee aims to constantly showcase even more promotions to minimize any burden that visitors may feel.

Any questions regarding group viewings, admission tickets, discounts, and more should be directed to the website of the Cheongju Craft Biennale Organizing Committee (www.okcj.org) or the Organizing Committee’s Promotional Marketing Team (043-219-1718).
