Subject The First in Korea to Create a Wild Animal Preservation Center for Witnessing Health Checkup for Animals
- Around KRW 740 million in total funding; scheduled to be built by Nov. this year
- Surgical procedures and health checkups for wild animals, raising expectations of promoting respect for life

Cheongju will become Korea’s first to furnish a “Wild Animal Preservation Center” where visitors will be able to witness health checkup for wild animals.

Cheongju City announced on Jun. 11 that a single-story center with total floor area of 192 ㎡ will be built within Cheongju Zoo.

Construction will begin in June and end in November this year, with total funding of KRW 743 million (national government: KRW 371 million, Chungcheongbuk-do: KRW 75 million, Cheongju-si: KRW 297 million).

The preservation center will perform surgical procedures and health checkups for wild animals. The city will also install a viewing window to let the center become Korea’s first to display the health checkup process for wild animals.

Furthermore, the center is expected to contribute to preserving and recovering endangered species by establishing a refrigeration and freezing facility for reproductive cells.

“We believe the purpose of our facility, as a public zoo, is to search continuously for ways that are beneficial for both citizens and animals. Not only will the center offer a sight never before seen to visitors but also awaken their respect for life,” an official from the zoo said.

Having stood in the national spotlight in July last year after rescuing “Barami,” a lion that starved to the point that its ribs were showing, Cheongju Zoo currently preserves 295 animals of 68 species.

In particular, the zoo has consistently strived to protect endangered species and their habitat, having been designated as an ex-situ conservation institution by the Ministry of Environment in 2014 and as a clinic for natural monuments in 2021. In recognition of such efforts, the zoo became the first in Korea to be designated as a foothold zoo by the Ministry of Environment in May 2024 to serve roles including zoo safety management, quarantine for disease, and wild animal rescue operations.
